Ai as estatinas outra vez (desta vez sim, dizem eles)!

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/statins-side-effects-thousands-dying-heart-attacks-stroke-lancet-peter-sever-nocebo-effect-a7714796.html

Citação:
"A major new study into the side effects of the cholesterol-lowering medicine suggests common symptoms such as muscle pain and weakness are not caused by the drugs themselves.

The study, which involved around 10,000 patients at risk of heart and artery disease, highlighted a psychosomatic response where the expectation of a bad outcome led to reports of physical symptoms."
(...)
"What our study shows is that it’s precisely the expectation of harm that is likely causing the increase in muscle pain and weakness, rather than the drugs themselves causing them.”

Professor Sever, from Imperial College London, said “tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands” of people are dying because they are choosing not to take statins for fear of side-effects that do not exist.

Statins, prescribed to help reduce the risk of potentially deadly cardiovascular disease, are the most-prescribed drug in the UK, taken by around six million people every day."

http://m.huffpost.com/uk/entry/uk_5909894be4b02655f8422625

Citando:
"A team of researchers said people who follow a gluten-free diet may be putting their health at risk because they are not eating whole grains, which are known to reduce the risk of heart disease.

They said their message is for people who do not suffer from coeliac disease - a common digestive condition where the small intestine becomes inflamed and unable to absorb nutrients due to an adverse reaction to gluten."

(...)
"The results showed that, over a 26-year follow-up, no significant association was found between gluten intake and the risk of heart disease.

But the researchers said analysis showed that restricting gluten may lead to a lower intake of whole grains."

Contar calorias equivale a jejuar (para controlo peso)?

http://www.thehealthsite.com/news/weight-loss-methods-alternate-day-fasting-or-counting-daily-calories-which-is-more-effective-ag0517/

Citando:
"A new obesity study suggests either approach can be effective for weight loss. Intermittent or alternate-day fasting requires routinely alternating between eating little or no food and then feasting in your daily diet. It has become a growing weight loss trend in the US, the UK and other regions around the world. The small study, published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, suggests that there is no significant difference"

"Two pints of beer could provide better pain relief than paracetamol, study shows - This is NOT an excuse to drink more":

Citando:
"(...) elevating blood alcohol content to roughly 0.08% gives the body a "small elevation of pain threshold," which works to reduce pain intensity. The report reads: "Findings suggest that alcohol is an effective analgesic that delivers clinically-relevant reductions in ratings of pain intensity, which could explain alcohol misuse in those with persistent pain, despite its potential consequences for long-term health."
It was concluded that as little as two pints of beer could cut perceived discomfort by a quarter."

""Paracetamol can be used safely for most types of pain, however if there is inflammation than using a non-steroid anti-flammatory painkiller such as ibuprofen is a better option. The standard adult dose of paracetamol is two 500mg tablets to be taken up to four times a day. If you are taking paracetamol regularly at this dose and not getting enough pain relief you should see your GP, who may recommend a strong painkiller for you.""

Genoma do chá descodificado

http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-39747720
Citação:
"A team in China has decoded the genetic building blocks of the tea plant, Camellia sinensiswhose leaves are used for all types of tea, including black, green and oolong.
The research gives an insight into the chemicals that give tea its flavour.
Until now, little has been known about the genetics of the plant, despite its huge economic and cultural importance.
(...)
Decoding the genome of the tea plant took more than five years. At three billion DNA base pairs in length, the tea plant genome is more than four times the size of the coffee plant genome and much larger than most sequenced plant species."

Qual o melhor exercício à medida que vamos envelhecendo?

Qual o melhor exercício para músculos envelhecidos?
R: Treino intercalado (vs. Levantamento ou corrida normal).

Citando:
"There were some unsurprising differences: The gains in muscle mass and strength were greater for those who exercised only with weights, while interval training had the strongest influence on endurance.
But more unexpected results were found in the biopsied muscle cells. Among the younger subjects who went through interval training, the activity levels had changed in 274 genes, compared with 170 genes for those who exercised more moderately and 74 for the weight lifters. Among the older cohort, almost 400 genes were working differently now, compared with 33 for the weight lifters and only 19 for the moderate exercisers.
Many of these affected genes, especially in the cells of the interval trainers, are believed to influence the ability of mitochondria to produce energy for muscle cells; the subjects who did the interval workouts showed increases in the number and health of their mitochondria — an impact that was particularly pronounced among the older cyclists."
