http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-35252650
Citando:
"The review found that the benefits of alcohol for heart health only apply for women aged 55 and over - and even then it's in very small amounts, around five units a week.
The guidelines say: "There is no justification for recommending drinking on health grounds - nor for starting drinking for health reasons."
It also says that evidence in support for drinking alcohol in small amounts to maintain good health was "weaker than it was at the time of 1995"."
(...)
Is there a safe drinking level?
No. The new recommendations are at pains to point out that these guidelines are not for "safe" drinking, but rather just at minimising risk of illness.
All alcohol consumption carries some risk, the guidance says.
"The vast majority of the population can reduce health risks further if they reduce drinking below the guideline levels, or do not drink at all," the guidance says.
Drinking above the new recommended 14 units a week is the point at which a person's risk of an early death increases by 1% - the equivalent amount of risk as driving a car."
PS.

"Broken-heart syndrome is when a surge of stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, cause arteries to seize, limiting blood flow to the heart. The experience — and diagnosis — is often confused with heart attack, Creager said.
Both conditions look the same on an electrocardiogram, said cardiologist Dr. Holly Andersen, director of education for the heart institute at New York Presbyterian Hospital and scientific adviser for the Women's Heart Alliance. But where heart attacks are caused by blocked arteries, there are no such blockages in "broken" hearts.
The condition can be treated, and even heal untreated, she said, but it can also cause heart arrhythmias and sudden death.
Japanese researchers were the first to describe broken-heart syndrome in 1990. They named it takotsubo, which means "octopus pot," for the way the malfunctioning heart appears in imaging studies."

A ciência à volta dos... peidos, perdão, gases!
Há todo o tipo de ciência. A boa e a má.

"Thankfully there is a way to counteract the effects of cysteine, to an extent.
According to gastroenterology, nutrition and dietetics expert Chu Yao at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, starchy foods act as a resistant to hydrogen sulphide gas.
They can reduce the production of it by up to 75 per cent, so even if you’ve a protein-rich diet, you should be able to limit the active sulphide gases in your stomach.
Starch-rich foods that are resistant to hydrogen sulphide gas include potatoes, bananas, cereals and artichokes.
Foods that are resistant to hydrogen sulphide gas (starchy foods):
Potatoes [in PT: Batatas]
Bananas
Legumes
Cereals
Artichokes [alcachofra]
Asparagus [aspargos]
Fructans (found in wheat) [frutano]
These foods are broken down before the proteins as they are highly fermentable, meaning “the focus is taken away from the protein, so hydrogen sulphide is not produced”, according to Yao, who presented the group’s findings at at a Gastroenterological Society of Australia conference in Adelaide."

Researchers found that the reason some farts are eye-wateringly foul is because the gas contains cysteine, a component present in meat, dairy, eggs and other types of protein.
When you eat the foods containing cysteine, it multiplies the amount of hydrogen sulphide gas – the odour ogre – in your tummy by seven."

There was no place we could turn to in order to get unbiased information on supplements. Sure, there was Wikipedia, but it wasn’t getting deep into the science. Everyone else? Had an agenda. Supplement companies misrepresenting science. Media sensationalizing headlines. Companies and individuals pushing unneeded supplements and other products onto you.
That’s why Examine.com started in 2011. Fully independent from the start, we’ve never sold any supplements. Or done any coaching or consulting. Or any kind of advertising or sponsorship.
Our goal from day 1 has always been: read the research, make sense of it, and put it online. We’re an education company that looks at the research — nothing more, nothing less.
And that’s why we’re the trusted brand. We have an entire team, from medical doctors to researchers to professors to pharmacists. Collectively, we come to a consensus that you can trust.

“REPROGRAMMING MY BIOCHEMISTRY A common attitude is that taking substances other than food, such as supplements and medications, should be a last resort, something one takes only to address overt problems. Terry and I believe strongly that this is a bad strategy, particularly as one approaches middle age and beyond. Our philosophy is to embrace the unique opportunity we have at this time and place to expand our longevity and human potential. In keeping with this health philosophy, I am very active in reprogramming my biochemistry. Overall, I am quite satisfied with the dozens of blood levels I routinely test. My biochemical profile has steadily improved during the years that I have done this. For boosting antioxidant levels and for general health, I take a comprehensive vitamin-and-mineral combination, alpha lipoic acid, coenzyme Q10, grapeseed extract, resveratrol, bilberry extract, lycopene, silymarin (milk thistle), conjugated linoleic acid, lecithin, evening primrose oil (omega-6 essential fatty acids), n-acetyl-cysteine, ginger, garlic, l-carnitine, pyridoxal-5-phosphate, and echinacea. I also take Chinese herbs prescribed by Dr. Glenn Rothfeld. For reducing insulin resistance and overcoming my type 2 diabetes, I take chromium, metformin (a powerful anti-aging medication that decreases insulin resistance and which we recommend everyone over 50 consider taking), and gymnema sylvestra. To improve LDL and HDL cholesterol levels, I take policosanol, gugulipid, plant sterols, niacin, oat bran, grapefruit powder, psyllium, lecithin, and Lipitor. To improve blood vessel health, I take arginine, trimethylglycine, and choline. To decrease blood viscosity, I take a daily baby aspirin and lumbrokinase, a natural anti-fibrinolytic agent. Although my CRP (the screening test for inflammation in the body) is very low, I reduce inflammation by taking EPA/DHA (omega-3 essential fatty acids) and curcumin. I have dramatically reduced my homocysteine level by taking folic acid, B6, and trimethylglycine (TMG), and intrinsic factor to improve methylation. I have a B12 shot once a week and take a daily B12 sublingual. Several of my intravenous therapies improve my body’s detoxification: weekly EDTA (for chelating heavy metals, a major source of aging) and monthly DMPS (to chelate mercury). I also take n-acetyl-l-carnitine orally. I take weekly intravenous vitamins and alpha lipoic acid to boost antioxidants. I do a weekly glutathione IV to boost liver health. Perhaps the most important intravenous therapy I do is a weekly phosphatidylcholine (PtC) IV, which rejuvenates all of the body’s tissues by restoring youthful cell membranes. I also take PtC orally each day, and I supplement my hormone levels with DHEA and testosterone. I take I-3-C (indole-3-carbinol), chrysin, nettle, ginger, and herbs to reduce conversion of testosterone into estrogen. I take a saw palmetto complex for prostate health. For stress management, I take l-theonine (the calming substance in green tea), beta sitosterol, phosphatidylserine, and green tea supplements, in addition to drinking 8 to 10 cups of green tea itself. At bedtime, to aid with sleep, I take GABA (a gentle, calming neuro-transmitter) and sublingual melatonin. For brain health, I take acetyl-l-carnitine, vinpocetine, phosphatidylserine, ginkgo biloba, glycerylphosphorylcholine, nextrutine, and quercetin. For eye health, I take lutein and bilberry extract. For skin health, I use an antioxidant skin cream on my face, neck, and hands each day. For digestive health, I take betaine HCL, pepsin, gentian root, peppermint, acidophilus bifodobacter, fructooligosaccharides, fish proteins, l-glutamine, and n-acetyl-d-glucosamine. To inhibit the creation of advanced glycosylated end products (AGEs), a key aging process, I take n-acetyl-carnitine, carnosine, alpha lipoic acid, and quercetin. MAINTAINING A POSITIVE “HEALTH SLOPE” [is also] Most important (...).”

"The research involved a six-week trial with patients suffering from clinical depression, during which they were trained to spot warning signs for stress, and then review stressful situations they had been in, focusing particularly on what could be seen, heard, felt, smelled and the sequence of what happened.
Results showed it reduced symptoms of depression, outperforming the usual treatment from the GP alone, the psychologists said.
Prof Watkins added: "We have found in the lab that when people train themselves to think about the specific sensory details, context and sequence of an emotional event, including how it unfolded, they were more emotionally resilient to an unexpected stressor than those who thought about the meaning and implications of emotional events."

"Their conclusion does not provide much of a jolt: Eating protein is related to satiety in the short term, they say. Even “modestly higher” amounts of protein may help you feel fuller between meals, though the team could not determine an actual formula, say grams of protein per BMI for men or women. They also say it’s unclear if the results hold up over the long term or if, say, your body gets used to the added protein.
However, if you’d like to put this into practice — if you’re on a diet and scaling back on calories and don’t want to feel hungry — the researchers suggest you eat additional protein in small increments as a first step. Protein-rich foods consist of dairy (eggs, milk, and yogurt), meat (steak, pork chops, lamb), fish (tuna, salmon, halibut, octopus), fowl (chicken and turkey), legumes (beans, peanuts, and lentils) and some grains (wheat germ and quinoa)."

"A clinical trial has shown that a new, non-surgical method of treatment for low-risk prostate cancer can effectively kill cancer cells whilst at the same time preserving healthy tissue.
The new treatment is called vascular-targeted photodynamic therapy, or VTP. According to University College London Hospitals (UCLH), the treatment uses a light-sensitive drug, which is injected into the bloodstream. A laser then activates the drug, which eradicates tumour tissue in the prostate.
The drug used is called WST11 and comes from bacteria found at the bottom of the ocean. These bacteria have evolved to turn light into energy in a very efficient way. This trait has been exploited to develop WST11, which UCLH describes as “a compound that releases free radicals to kill surrounding cells when activated by laser light.”"

Proponents of minimalist running often claim that running without shoes decreases the risk of injuries by promoting landings near the front of the feet, near the toes, instead of landing on the heel purportedly more likely with standard shoes.
Their research suggests that this claim is unfounded and that "it is not appropriate to associate barefoot running with toe landing and shod running with heel landing," because factors like surface, shoe type, running speed, and individual differences are too variable to consistently make the links."

http://www.bbc.com/news/health-38364331
Citando:
"Dr Andrew Fowell, liver expert at the Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "Identifying people who are at risk of liver disease and offering them non-invasive testing to diagnose cirrhosis is key to ensuring they are given the treatment and support they need early enough to prevent serious complications.
"Ten years ago diagnosis of cirrhosis would often require a liver biopsy, but now with advances in non-invasive testing it is much easier for patients and health professionals to make a diagnosis."
The draft quality standard from NICE recommends a non-invasive scan called transient elastography which uses ultrasound and low-frequency elastic waves to check the liver. A consultation on the draft document is open until February 2017."
Citando:
"Women who regularly drink more than three-and-a-half bottles of wine a week should get their livers checked, says new draft advice for England.
For men, the threshold is five bottles of wine a week or 50 units of alcohol, says the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.
The organisation says GPs should refer "harmful" drinkers for liver scans.
Cirrhosis can be silent until the damage becomes so extensive it stops the liver working."

A US study found an association between the long-term use of these widely used painkillers and reported hearing loss.
Researchers calculated just over 1 in 20 (5.5%) hearing loss cases in their study could have been the result of painkiller use.
But they say it's not possible for this study to prove the drugs caused the hearing problems.
Previous studies have linked aspirin, paracetamol, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) types of painkiller, such as ibuprofen, with hearing loss."

"Technically referred to as bipolar androgen therapy (BAT), the treatment is aimed at patients who have metastatic prostate cancer that's otherwise resistant to treatment by chemical or surgical castration. It's based on the idea, supported by previous studies, that high doses of testosterone can interfere with cancer cell division in some cases, and actually cause some cancer cells to make breaks in their own DNA."

"The Swiss food giant, Nestle, says it has made a scientific breakthrough that can sharply cut the sugar in its chocolate.
The company, which makes Kitkat and Aero, says its researchers have found a way to structure sugar differently, so that it uses 40% less.
It claims this can be done without affecting the taste.
Nestle says it is patenting the findings, and it would start using the new sugar across its range from 2018.
Its scientists altered the structure of sugar so that it dissolves more quickly."

Citando:
"A study looking at the impact of individual sports on mortality found racquet sports reduced the risk of death by around 47%.
Researchers also found reduced risks of death for people who took part in cycling, swimming and aerobics.
They didn't find such effects for people who took part in rugby, football or running – although this unexpected finding may be explained by the low number of deaths, which may have skewed the statistics. The smaller the data set, the bigger the chance of the data being influenced by chance.
While the researchers found taking part in some sports reduced the risk of death compared to not taking part, they did not directly compare the benefits of different sports. That means we can't say which sport is "best" for health.
What is clear from the study is that any sort of regular physical activity is likely to help us stay healthier and live longer."
(...)
The study was carried out by researchers from the UKK Institute in Finland, University of Edinburgh, University of Oxford, Loughborough University and University of Exeter in the UK, Victoria University and University of Sydney in Australia, and University of Graz in Austria. No information about funding was provided."

Machismo e problemas psicológicos?

"Psychologists looking at 10 years of data from nearly 20,000 men found that those who value having power over women and endorse playboy-type behaviour and other traditional notions of masculinity are more likely to suffer from psychological problems - and less likely to seek out help.
The new meta-analysis, which was published Monday in the Journal of Counseling Psychology, synthesised 78 studies on masculinity and mental health gathered between 2003 and 2013. The participants ranged in age from 12 to over 65, and the vast majority were men. A little more than half of the studies involved predominantly white men, though some focused on African Americans or Asian Americans. Most of the studies didn’t ask respondents’ sexual orientation, but among those that did, most of the participants were straight.
Researchers then identified 11 norms considered to be “traditionally masculine” - desire to win, need for emotional control, risk-taking, violence, dominance, sexual promiscuity or playboy behaviour, self-reliance, primacy of work, power over women, disdain for homosexuality and pursuit of status - and looked to see if they were associated with particular mental health outcomes."

"People who take part in the trial will have their blood passed through a machine that resets abnormal levels of proteins seen in older blood. The scientists believe these high levels of certain proteins can hamper the growth and maintenance of healthy body tissues, and so contribute to their deterioration in old age.
Plans for the trial emerged as scientists announced the results of the animal study, which was part-funded by Calico, Google’s life extension company. The study showed that infusions of old blood reduced the growth of fresh liver and brain cells in young mice and impaired their performance in a strength test.
The same series of experiments found evidence that infusions of young blood could speed up muscle repair in older animals."

Citando:
"Your day might be filled with irritatingly hot temperatures, thick air pollution and maybe even pockets of rainclouds, but that won’t necessarily get you down. If you’re able to soak up enough sun, your level of emotional distress should remain stable. Take away sun time, though, and your distress can spike. This applies to the clinical population at large, not just those diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder.
“That’s one of the surprising pieces of our research,” said Mark Beecher, clinical professor and licensed psychologist in BYU Counselling and Psychological Services. “On a rainy day, or a more polluted day, people assume that they’d have more distress. But we didn’t see that. We looked at solar irradiance, or the amount of sunlight that actually hits the ground. We tried to take into account cloudy days, rainy days, pollution . . . but they washed out. The one thing that was really significant was the amount of time between sunrise and sunset.”"

Mike Stratton, who co-led the work at Britain's Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, said it was a bit like digging in to the archaeology of each tumour.
'The genome of every cancer provides a kind of archaeological record, written in the DNA code itself, of the exposures that caused the mutations,' he said. "

Cozinhar acima dos 150 graus?
https://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2016-11/uoe-ctm110216.php
Citando:
"Cooking food at temperatures above 150 degrees centigrade changes their chemical structure and can lead to the formation of toxic products known as neo-formed contaminants (NFCs).
These include trans-fatty acids - which are known to be harmful and are banned from food sold in many parts of the world - and other toxins called advanced glycation end-products.
Frying foods at a high heat is particularly problematic because the oils readily break down to form trans-fatty acids.
An international team - led by the University of Edinburgh - reviewed previous studies that have investigated the effects of NFCs on human and animal tissue. The studies explored the relationship between these products and heart disease risk.
Their findings revealed that cooking methods - including frying and roasting - which are common in South Asian countries created high levels of trans-fatty acids, especially if the oil is reused."

- O tamanho "normal": https://www.prozis.com/pt/pt/prozis-foods/manteiga-de-amendoim-500-g
- O tamanho "alarve": https://www.prozis.com/pt/pt/prozis-foods/manteiga-de-amendoim-1000-g
Conseguem adivinhar qual?
Fica a informação. FFR.

Ai os Glifosatos - reloaded
A novela continua...

"Pressure has been growing on the experts who worked on IARC's glyphosate review in part because other regulators, including in the United States, Europe, Canada, Japan and New Zealand, say the weedkiller is unlikely to pose a cancer risk to humans.
The conflicting scientific assessments have delayed a decision on whether glyphosate should be relicensed for sale in Europe, and prompted senior U.S. lawmakers to question whether IARC should receive funding from U.S. taxpayers.
IARC defends its methods as scientifically sound and says its monographs - the name it gives to its classifications of carcinogens - are "widely respected for their scientific rigor, standardized and transparent process and ... freedom from conflicts of interest"."

10 Slimming/Anti-inflamatory Foods to Eat If You Sit All Day | TIME
10 Slimming Foods to Eat If You Sit All Day | TIME
Citando:
"Science backs this up: Prolonged sitting has been linked to everything from increased hunger and inflammation (which both lead to obesity and belly fat) to high blood pressure and high blood sugar. If you’ve ever heard the phrase “sitting is the new smoking,” now you know where it stems from. But the damage doesn’t stop there. In addition to these preventable diseases, spending too much time on your behind can also result in tight hip flexors, back pain, weak glutes, and rounded, sore shoulders which are all things that can decrease the effectiveness of your workout or lead to a disabling injury, says Piya Tony Vacharasanee, NASM, ACSM, of Body Space Fitness in New York City. All that from an innocent-looking swivel chair.
(...)
But tweaking your diet may also help diminish some of the health risks associated with sitting. A number of nutrients have been shown to fight inflammation by “turning off” inflammatory genes. Add these recommended foods that follow into your diet to help ease some of the damage of your 9-to-5 and you’ll be on your way to a leaner, healthier you."

Noz-de-areca e cancro

"It was found that participants who had been sleep deprived for approximately 35 hours showed a greater amygdala response when presented with emotionally negative pictures when compared to those who had not been sleep deprived. A maneira de ser Nórdica faz bem à saúde? How to Hygge (Livro)
Parece que sim. E as louras também?
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-3828609/Ten-reasons-HYGGE-Scandinavian-lifestyle-trend-cosy-content.html
Citando:
"So what’s it all about? Well, there’s no direct translation: hygge – pronounced ‘hoo-ga’ – is a Nordic word that describes ‘a feeling of cosiness and content’, and ‘enjoying the good things in life with good people around you’.
For Swedish people like me, the traditional midsummer celebration is the essence of ‘hygge’, but its philosophy goes far beyond an annual lunch in the garden: it is a mentality shared by all Viking descendants.
And there is overwhelming medical evidence that adopting a few of our Nordic ways might just be the health boost you’re looking for…"

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2016/10/04/scientists-discover-fat-craving-gene-after-hosting-all-you-can-e/
Citando:
"Scientists have found a gene mutation which makes fatty foods irresistible, and even causes carriers to reject low-calorie versions of the same meal - even when it looks and tastes identical."
Sobre o gene MC4R:
"British scientists have identified a section of genetic code that makes half the population more vulnerable to obesity, diabetes and heart disease.
Those carrying the sequence are on average 4.4lb (2kg) heavier than those who lack it, with 2cm larger waistline, and a tendency to become resistant to the effects of insulin - which can lead to Type 2 diabetes.
The DNA sequence - carried by 50 per cent of the UK population - is a third more common among people of Indian Asian ancestry than among Europeans, say researchers."

Pílula contraceptiva ligada a depressão?
... Ou "doorhandle diagnosis" conforme o autor desta notícia suspeita?
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-3816789/DR-MAX-MIND-DOCTOR-reason-Pill-linked-depression.html
Citando:
"Doorknob revelations can be crucial. A throw-away remark made by a patient as they’re halfway out the door may just be the missing piece of the puzzle; the clue that sounds a klaxon that the patient has a serious physical illness, such as cancer.
However, in my experience, a ‘door-handle diagnosis’ is very often about a patient’s mental health — because, I think, people are too embarrassed or ashamed to make an appointment explicitly to discuss how they are feeling.
Doorhandle diagnosis shows why a really good GP, or nurse, should routinely ask their patient , ever so casually, if everything else is OK."

http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/12252824

"Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is a type of dementia that shares symptoms with both Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.
It may account for 10-15 per cent of all cases of dementia.
DLB can be diagnosed wrongly and is often mistaken for Alzheimer’s disease.
Lewy bodies are the cause of DLB and Parkinson’s disease. They are two of several diseases caused by Lewy bodies that affect the brain and nervous system and get worse over time. These are sometimes called Lewy body disorders.
The way someone is affected by DLB will depend partly on where the Lewy bodies are in the brain:
Lewy bodies at the base of the brain are closely linked to problems with movement (motor symptoms). These are the main feature of Parkinson’s disease.
Lewy bodies in the outer layers of the brain are linked to problems with mental abilities (cognitive symptoms), which is a feature of DLB.
Symptons include problems with mental abilities, such as staring into space for a long time or periods when speech is disorganised; depression; day-to-day memory loss; hallucinations and delusions; movement problems; sleep disturbance; a loss of smell; urinary incontinence.

Saúde mental no Reino Unido
... A degradar-se desde o último inquérito:
http://m.huffpost.com/uk/entry/12262340
Citando:
"The seven years since the last Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey has seen the start of a major change in the way our society views mental health. A notable shift in public attitudes towards mental health is underway, and mental health issues are now widely recognised.
Factors such as recession, poverty and unemployment have adversely affected the mental health of the nation, leading to an increase in demand for help and support and at the same time, services are under enormous pressure.
The data paints a stark picture. In some groups of the population it is stabilising, while in other groups it is worsening. Nowhere is it improving. We can now start to see the true scale of an issue which has been stigmatised for centuries and it is deeply worrying for all. "

Álcool como anti-depressivo (auto-medicação)?
http://www.medicaldaily.com/depression-alcohol-has-same-effects-rapid-anti-depressants-study-says-399568
Citando:
"Because of the high comorbidity between major depressive disorder and alcoholism there is the widely recognized self-medication hypothesis, suggesting that depressed individuals may turn to drinking as a means to treat their depression," she said in a press release. "We now have biochemical and behavioral data to support that hypothesis."
Raab-Graham cautioned, however, that relying on the intoxicating substance can still pose a threat.
"There's definitely a danger in self-medicating with alcohol," she added. "There's a very fine line between it being helpful and harmful, and at some point during repeated use self-medication turns into addiction."
