Sobre cortar com o açúcar - uma história

http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree/item/a3cc65e5-c8e7-4d03-b6a1-23eb638daf6e

Citando:
"The constant bad news about sugar has suddenly got to me. There are stats showing that sugar consumption is at its highest level in history. The government is trying to get the food industry to cut the amount of sugar in popular products like chocolate bars by 20% by 2020.

I realise that I am the average UK adult, who consumes at least 15 teaspoons of sugar a day. (This may sound a lot, but there are seven teaspoons in just one fizzy drink can.) The World Health Organisation recommends eating just six.

A high-sugar diet is linked to obesity, and being overweight can increase the risk of getting Type 2 diabetes.A 2014 study found that there is a much higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease among people who get a lot of their calories from added sugar."

Relação entre açúcar e cancro melhor percebida

http://visao.sapo.pt/visaomais/2017-10-17-O-acucar-estimula-o-crescimento-de-tumores-malignos

Citando:

https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/02/170223124253.htm

Citando:
"For the first time a "tipping point" molecular link between the blood sugar glucose and Alzheimer's disease has been established by scientists, who have shown that excess glucose damages a vital enzyme involved with inflammation response to the early stages of Alzheimer's.
(...)

By studying brain samples from people with and without Alzheimer's using a sensitive technique to detect glycation, the team discovered that in the early stages of Alzheimer's glycation damages an enzyme called MIF (macrophage migration inhibitory factor) which plays a role in immune response and insulin regulation.

MIF is involved in the response of brain cells called glia to the build-up of abnormal proteins in the brain during Alzheimer's disease, and the researchers believe that inhibition and reduction of MIF activity caused by glycation could be the 'tipping point' in disease progression. It appears that as Alzheimer's progresses, glycation of these enzymes increases.

The study is published in the journal Scientific Reports"

Os muffins são bons mas são... Doces!

Citando:
"A report on High Street goodies found Pret A Manger’s Double Berry Muffins contain 40g of sugar – 10 teaspoons of the white stuff.
And Pret’s Lemon Drizzle slice contains 72g of sugar, or 18 teaspoons."

http://www.bbc.com/news/business-38167241
"The Swiss food giant, Nestle, says it has made a scientific breakthrough that can sharply cut the sugar in its chocolate.
The company, which makes Kitkat and Aero, says its researchers have found a way to structure sugar differently, so that it uses 40% less.
It claims this can be done without affecting the taste.
Nestle says it is patenting the findings, and it would start using the new sugar across its range from 2018.
Its scientists altered the structure of sugar so that it dissolves more quickly."
(...)
"Other food companies have made technological breakthroughs with ingredients. Six years ago, PepsiCo, which owns the Walkers crisp brand, developed a designer salt molecule that it said would allow it to use less sodium without affecting taste."

Artificial Sweeteners Aren’t the Answer to Obesity: Here’s Why | TIME

Artificial Sweeteners Aren’t the Answer to Obesity: Here’s Why | TIME

Citando:
"They’re supposed to be the sweet alternative to high-calorie, diabetes-causing sugar. But the latest science shows that artificial sweeteners may actually set us up for obesity and diabetes

Aspartame, saccharin, sucralose  - sugar alternatives go by many names, but share an almost irresistible promise: all the sweetness of sugar without the calories, weight gain and increased risk of diabetes that comes with uncontrolled amounts of sugar in the blood."

Reduzir calorias reduzindo... O tamanho!

http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2016/01/sugar-is-the-new-public-health-enemy-1/423207/ Quoting: Governments try to reduce consumption of the sweet stuff through guidelines and taxes.
