Estatinas e risco de diabetes?

Mais um capítulo na novela das estatinas?

Ai o substituto das estatinas?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2017/08/27/new-wonder-drug-hailed-biggest-breakthrough-fight-against-heart/

Citando:
"Cholesterol-busting statins are given to millions of adults deemed to be at risk of heart disease.

But half of heart attacks occur in people who do not have high cholesterol at all.

Now scientists have found that reducing inflammation in the body can protect against a host of conditions - with a “really dramatic effect” on cancer deaths.

The drug canakinumab, given by injection every three months - cut repeat heart attacks by one quarter. Statins cut the risk by around 15 per cent."

O preço:
"The new treatment - which works by blocking part of the immune system called interleukin-1 - currently costs around £40,000 annually to treat a patient with the drug, compared to just £20 for statins."

https://www.publico.pt/2017/08/13/ciencia/noticia/colesterol-e-estatinas-porque-ter-medo-da-verdade-1782065

Muitos poucos.

Ai as estatinas, outra vez

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/2017/05/26/statins-help-repair-heart-lowering-cholesterol-study-suggests/

Citando:
"Statins not only lower cholesterol but also repair the heart and restore lost function, a new study suggests.

Around six million people in Britain are prescribed statins but many people do not take the drugs over fears they caused debilitating side-effects.

Last year a 30-year study concluded that the benefits of statins far outweighed the risks and claimed they helped prevent around 80,000 heart attacks a year.

Now new research by Queen Mary University of London suggests they are even more beneficial. Not only do they lower cholesterol but they also appear to improve heart health.

The researchers suspect that the drugs reduce oxidative stress and so slows down heart ageing while at the same time boosting blood flow to help repair damage and lower stress.

The team used magnetic resonance scanning (MRI) to peer into the hearts of 4,622 men and women in their 60s from the UK Biobank, of whom 785 were taking statins.

Compared with untreated individuals, patients prescribed the medicines had lower left ventricular heart chambers containing 2.4 per cent less muscle mass, meaning their hearts were fitter and healthier and more able to pump blood effectively.

The effect was striking because those prescribed statins had been judged to the biggest risk of heart problems. They had higher BMIs, higher blood pressure and were on average four years older."

Ai as estatinas (e os ataques cardíacos - NOT)!

http://www.express.co.uk/life-style/health/808096/heart-attack-symptoms-statins

Citação:
"Statins, medication which helps to reduce cholesterol, are being increasingly prescribed to older patients to prevent premature death.

However, now experts have said the is a lack of evidence this actually benefits the patients.

A new study published today has revealed the drugs might not extend lifespan in adults with healthy hearts.

Researchers based in New York City have analysed data from more than 2,500 adults who participated in a previous trial around hypertension and treatment to prevent heart attacks, which finished in 2002."

Ai as estatinas outra vez (desta vez sim, dizem eles)!

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/statins-side-effects-thousands-dying-heart-attacks-stroke-lancet-peter-sever-nocebo-effect-a7714796.html

Citação:
"A major new study into the side effects of the cholesterol-lowering medicine suggests common symptoms such as muscle pain and weakness are not caused by the drugs themselves.

The study, which involved around 10,000 patients at risk of heart and artery disease, highlighted a psychosomatic response where the expectation of a bad outcome led to reports of physical symptoms."
(...)
"What our study shows is that it’s precisely the expectation of harm that is likely causing the increase in muscle pain and weakness, rather than the drugs themselves causing them.”

Professor Sever, from Imperial College London, said “tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands” of people are dying because they are choosing not to take statins for fear of side-effects that do not exist.

Statins, prescribed to help reduce the risk of potentially deadly cardiovascular disease, are the most-prescribed drug in the UK, taken by around six million people every day."

Pasta de dentes revolucionária

 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-3850014/Revolutionary-new-toothpaste-not-removes-plaque-save-heart-attack.html
Citando:
"His research is estimated to have saved more than a million lives worldwide.
Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, the professor added: ‘This could have policy implications for tens of millions of people alongside statins, aspirin and beta blockers and other agents that help lower cardiovascular disease.
‘The distinguishing thing in my mind about this is that it is a fairly simple thing to do and yet it could have a big impact. And there are no side-effects that we know of.’
(...)
Created in the US, the special toothpaste removes twice as much plaque as rivals.
Levels of inflammation in those using it fell by 29 per cent – only slightly lower than the level of 37 per cent achieved by the use of statins.
Inflammation is measured by the high sensitivity C-reactive protein, a marker for heart attacks and strokes."

Alternativa às estatinas aprovada no RU (colesterol)

http://www.express.co.uk/life-style/health/682284/cholesterol-drug-treatment-approved-NICE-NHS

Citando:

"Patients that have high levels of LDL cholesterol, an inherited form of high cholesterol levels and those who are statin intolerant will benefit.
Despite the widespread use of statins and other lipid-lowering therapies to reduce raised cholesterol levels, some people in the UK remain at significant risk of having a cardiovascular event and are unable to lower their cholesterol to levels indicated within national guidelines.
Alirocumab belongs to the most recent cholesterol-lowering class of treatments called PCSK9 inhibitors.
PCSK9 is a protein that plays an important role in managing ‘bad’ cholesterol by regulating the number of receptors for ‘bad’ cholesterol on the liver’s surface."
