Cogumelos previnem demência?

Boa correlação para certos tipos de demência:
https://www.bbc.com/news/health-47554966

Citando:
"'Encouraging'

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) can make people forgetful, affect their memory and cause problems with language, attention and locating objects in spaces - but the changes can be subtle.

It is not serious enough to be defined as dementia.

The participants in the study were asked how often they ate six different types of mushrooms: oyster, shiitake, white button, dried, golden and tinned.

Mushroom eaters performed better in brain tests and were found to have faster processing speed - and this was particularly noticeable in those who ate more than two portions a week, or more than 300g (10.5oz).

"This correlation is surprising and encouraging," said assistant professor Lei Feng, the lead study author, from the university's department of psychological medicine."

Turmeric, red grape and apple can prevent prostate cancer | Daily Mail Online

Citando:

"Eating turmeric [açafrão], red grapes [uvas tintas] and apples [maçãs] could help to 'starve' prostate cancer cells and protect men from the disease

  • Mice who were fed the ingredients were able to kill off prostate cancer cells
  • When eaten in combination, the ingredients can 'starve' off cancer cells
  • Foods do this by stopping tumours from taking up compounds they need to grow
  • Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer among males"

Ai as estatinas outra vez (desta vez sim, dizem eles)!

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/statins-side-effects-thousands-dying-heart-attacks-stroke-lancet-peter-sever-nocebo-effect-a7714796.html

Citação:
"A major new study into the side effects of the cholesterol-lowering medicine suggests common symptoms such as muscle pain and weakness are not caused by the drugs themselves.

The study, which involved around 10,000 patients at risk of heart and artery disease, highlighted a psychosomatic response where the expectation of a bad outcome led to reports of physical symptoms."
(...)
"What our study shows is that it’s precisely the expectation of harm that is likely causing the increase in muscle pain and weakness, rather than the drugs themselves causing them.”

Professor Sever, from Imperial College London, said “tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands” of people are dying because they are choosing not to take statins for fear of side-effects that do not exist.

Statins, prescribed to help reduce the risk of potentially deadly cardiovascular disease, are the most-prescribed drug in the UK, taken by around six million people every day."

Erros inevitáveis associados a cancro?

http://wtop.com/health-fitness/2017/03/science-says-unavoidable-typos-in-dna-help-fuel-cancer/

Citando:
"Lifestyle and heredity get the most blame but new research suggests random chance plays a bigger role than people realize: Healthy cells naturally make mistakes when they multiply, unavoidable typos in DNA that can leave new cells carrying cancer-prone genetic mutations.

How big? About two-thirds of the mutations that occur in various forms of cancer are due to those random copying errors, researchers at Johns Hopkins University reported Thursday in the journal Science.

Whoa: That doesn’t mean most cases of cancer are due solely to “bad luck.” It takes multiple mutations to turn cells into tumors — and a lot of cancer is preventable, the Hopkins team stressed, if people take proven protective steps.

Thursday’s report is an estimate, based on a math model, that is sure to be hotly debated by scientists who say those unavoidable mistakes of nature play a much smaller role.

But whatever the ultimate number, the research offers a peek at how cancer may begin."
( ...)
"GENE MUTATIONS CAUSE CANCER BUT WHAT CAUSES THE MUTATIONS?

You might inherit some mutations, like flaws in BRCA genes that are infamous for causing aggressive breast and ovarian cancers in certain families.

More commonly, damage is caused by what scientists call environmental factors — the assault on DNA from the world around us and how we live our lives. There’s a long list of risks: Cigarette smoke, UV light from the sun, other forms of radiation, certain hormones or viruses, an unhealthy diet, obesity and lack of exercise.

Then there are those random copy errors in cells — what Vogelstein calls our baseline rate of genetic mutations that will occur no matter how healthy we live.

One way to think of it: If we all have some mutations lurking in our cells anyway, that’s yet another reason to avoid known risks that could push us over the edge.

HOW CELLS MAKE TYPOS (...)"

Como prevenir infecções fúngicas (sem medicamentos)?

http://www.express.co.uk/life-style/health/706715/fungal-yeast-infection-ringworm-athlete-s-foot-thrush-diet

Citando:
"The infections can range from common mild conditions, such as athlete's foot, candida infections, mycosis, ringworm and thrush, while others can be life-threatening, such as invasive aspergillosis.

It is common for doctors to prescribe creams to treat people suffering with the conditions.

However, nutritionist Nat Hawes, author of Nature Cures said ‘excessive consumption’ of the medicines has been found to result in both mild and serious side effects such as anaemia, diarrhoea, fever, headache, kidney damage and vomiting.

“Restoring the body’s natural defences by addressing the balance of beneficial bacteria in the body is often all it takes to clear yeast and fungal infections in the early stages,” said Nat."

- cranberry juice

http://www.bbc.com/news/health-38364331
Citando:
"Dr Andrew Fowell, liver expert at the Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "Identifying people who are at risk of liver disease and offering them non-invasive testing to diagnose cirrhosis is key to ensuring they are given the treatment and support they need early enough to prevent serious complications.
"Ten years ago diagnosis of cirrhosis would often require a liver biopsy, but now with advances in non-invasive testing it is much easier for patients and health professionals to make a diagnosis."
The draft quality standard from NICE recommends a non-invasive scan called transient elastography which uses ultrasound and low-frequency elastic waves to check the liver. A consultation on the draft document is open until February 2017."

Citando:
"Women who regularly drink more than three-and-a-half bottles of wine a week should get their livers checked, says new draft advice for England.
For men, the threshold is five bottles of wine a week or 50 units of alcohol, says the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.
The organisation says GPs should refer "harmful" drinkers for liver scans.
Cirrhosis can be silent until the damage becomes so extensive it stops the liver working."

Citando:
"Many survivors of breast cancers that are sensitive to estrogen are advised to take hormone-suppressing drugs such as tamoxifen for five years, to cut their odds for a recurrence.
Tamoxifen can have onerous side effects, however. Now, new research finds that taking an alternative, and less troublesome, class of medications for a full decade can reduce the risk for recurrence even more -- without affecting a woman's quality of life.
The newer class of hormone-suppressing drugs are called aromatase inhibitors, and include drugs such as letrozole (Femara), anastrozole (Arimidex) and exemestane (Aromasin)."
