Agora fazem bem ao coração (contrabalançando os efeitos secundários, descritos no artigo e em outros artigos):

"Statins not only lower cholesterol but also repair the heart and restore lost function, a new study suggests.
Around six million people in Britain are prescribed statins but many people do not take the drugs over fears they caused debilitating side-effects.
Last year a 30-year study concluded that the benefits of statins far outweighed the risks and claimed they helped prevent around 80,000 heart attacks a year.
Now new research by Queen Mary University of London suggests they are even more beneficial. Not only do they lower cholesterol but they also appear to improve heart health.
The researchers suspect that the drugs reduce oxidative stress and so slows down heart ageing while at the same time boosting blood flow to help repair damage and lower stress.
The team used magnetic resonance scanning (MRI) to peer into the hearts of 4,622 men and women in their 60s from the UK Biobank, of whom 785 were taking statins.
Compared with untreated individuals, patients prescribed the medicines had lower left ventricular heart chambers containing 2.4 per cent less muscle mass, meaning their hearts were fitter and healthier and more able to pump blood effectively.
The effect was striking because those prescribed statins had been judged to the biggest risk of heart problems. They had higher BMIs, higher blood pressure and were on average four years older."

Citação:
"A major new study into the side effects of the cholesterol-lowering medicine suggests common symptoms such as muscle pain and weakness are not caused by the drugs themselves.
The study, which involved around 10,000 patients at risk of heart and artery disease, highlighted a psychosomatic response where the expectation of a bad outcome led to reports of physical symptoms."
(...)
"What our study shows is that it’s precisely the expectation of harm that is likely causing the increase in muscle pain and weakness, rather than the drugs themselves causing them.”
Professor Sever, from Imperial College London, said “tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands” of people are dying because they are choosing not to take statins for fear of side-effects that do not exist.
Statins, prescribed to help reduce the risk of potentially deadly cardiovascular disease, are the most-prescribed drug in the UK, taken by around six million people every day."
Perda de paladar é um efeito secundário pouco falado:

"For people with cancer, having it treated often brings with it a range of side effects which can be extremely debilitating.
Patients undergoing chemotherapy most commonly experience life-affecting side effects including fatigue, hair loss, weight loss, vomiting and nausea and memory and concentration problems.
One of the lesser known side effects is loss of taste. Many people undergoing the treatment suddenly find they can not enjoy the foods they usually do, or find that all food is tasting the same or that they cannot taste anything at all."

http://m.indiatoday.in/story/now-four-in-one-pill-to-treat-high-blood-pressure/1/879831.html
Citando:
"Over four weeks 18 patients in Sydney were either given a quadpill - a single capsule containing four of the most commonly used blood pressure-lowering drugs each at a quarter dose - or a placebo.
This was then repeated for a further four weeks with the patients swapping their course of treatment.
Blood pressure levels were measured hourly over a 24 hour period at the end of each treatment, allowing researchers to significantly reduce the amount of patients normally required in a clinical trial.
As many as 100 per cent of patients on trial saw their blood levels drop below 140 over 90. Just 33 per cent of patients on the placebo achieved this rate.
None of the patients experienced side effects commonly associated with hypertension lowering drugs, which can vary from swollen ankles to kidney abnormalities depending on the type of class of the drug.
"What makes these results even more exciting is that these four blood pressure medications are already in use. We are increasingly finding there are opportunities to treat many commons diseases hiding in plain sight. This ultimately means we will be able to deliver life changing medications much more quickly, and more affordably," "
