Doctors using antidepressants to treat epidemic of loneliness

One in five people over 60 were prescribed the pills last year

Older people are twice as likely to be prescribed antidepressants as twentysomethings, with concerns growing that doctors are using drugs to combat emotional problems and “medicalising” loneliness.

Figures obtained by The Times suggest that Britain is suffering from an “epidemic of mismanaged distress”, with antidepressant use rising across the country and millions of people stuck on the drugs for the long term.

NHS data shows that 525,970 people aged 18-24 were prescribed an antidepressant last year, 11 per cent of the age group. This rises to 2,794,451 aged 40-59, 19 per cent of the age group, and 2,578,454 over-60s, or 20 per cent.

According to the World Health Organisation, about 5 per cent of all adults are thought to have depression at any one time…"

Exercício total para idosos?

https://health.spectator.co.uk/for-older-men-total-volume-of-exercise-matters-more-than-consistency/

Citando:
"Exercising for just a few minutes a day is linked to a lower risk of death in older men, according to new research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

The study suggests that the total volume of exercise matters. Current exercise guidelines recommend accumulating at least 150 minutes a week of moderate to vigorous physical activity in bouts lasting longer than ten minutes. But such a pattern is not always easy for older adults to achieve, say the researchers.

This lower level of intensity is also likely to be a better fit for older men, say the researchers.

To find out if other patterns of activity might still contribute to lowering the risk of death, the researchers drew on data from the British Regional Heart Study."

Perda de olfacto na terceira idade é mau sinal

E porquê mesmo?

Citação:
"A healthy sense of smell depends on a continual turnover of cells lining the nose
Losing this function could be an indicator of less regeneration in the body overall
Researchers from Stockholm followed 1,174 adults aged 40 to 90 for ten years

Pensioners who lose their sense of small are more likely to die within 10 years, according to a new study.

Researchers say the findings suggest measuring older patients’ sense of smell could indicate their overall well-being.

The analysis, of almost 1,800 people, found those who struggled to pick up scents and odours were more likely to die over the next decade.

And the phenomenon was not linked to those with dementia, which has previously been associated with a loss of smell.

(...)
Dr Olofsson said: 'Poor odour identification and poor self reported olfactory function are associated with greater likelihood of future mortality. Dementia does not attenuate the association between olfactory loss and mortality, suggesting olfactory loss might mark deteriorating health, irrespective of dementia.'

Three years ago a study of 3,000 adults found four in ten of those with the poorest sense of smell were dead within five years compared to just one in ten who identified odours correctly."
