"He said: "Allowing these drugs to be purchased without a prescription, and without any advice or restrictions, sends a message to the public that they must be safe.

"The findings are a stark reminder that NSAIDs are not harmless.

"Diclofenac and ibuprofen, both commonly used drugs, were associated with significantly increased risk of cardiac arrest.

"NSAIDs should be used with caution and for a valid indication. They should probably be avoided in patients with cardiovascular disease or many cardiovascular risk factors."

"The most common cause of a cardiac arrest is a life-threatening abnormal heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation (VF).

It causes electrical activity in the heart to become so chaotic that the organ ceases to pump rhythmically and quivers or "fibrillates" instead. Without immediate treatment to keep the circulation going, death occurs in minutes.

Sales of over-the-counter painkillers amounted to almost £600 million in the UK in 2015, according to The Pharmaceutical Journal."

Efeito de anti-inflamatórios (não esteróides) em dores de costas é negligenciável

"Widely used anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen have little more benefit than a placebo when it comes to treating back pain, a comprehensive review has found.
Researchers analysed 35 peer-reviewed trials on the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs] such as ibuprofen for back pain, reviewing data from 6,065 patients.
They found that none of the analgesics offered anything more than a mild relief for back-pain sufferers, and the effect was too small to be considered clinically important.

The comprehensive review, published in the journal Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, found while the drugs offered little to no benefit, patients taking them were 2.5 times more likely to suffer from gastrointestinal problems such a stomach ulcers and bleeding."

Toma prolongada de analgésicos em mulheres associada a perda de audiçao? (6 anos - NHS)

Citando:
"Women who take paracetamol or ibuprofen just twice a week could be damaging their hearing permanently," the Daily Mail reports.
A US study found an association between the long-term use of these widely used painkillers and reported hearing loss.
Researchers calculated just over 1 in 20 (5.5%) hearing loss cases in their study could have been the result of painkiller use.
But they say it's not possible for this study to prove the drugs caused the hearing problems.
Previous studies have linked aspirin, paracetamol, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) types of painkiller, such as ibuprofen, with hearing loss."
