Alterações na alimentação vs. uso de antibióticos...

"Salk Institute researchers report that giving mice dietary iron supplements enabled them to survive a normally lethal bacterial infection and resulted in later generations of those bacteria being less virulent. The approach, which appears in the journal Cell on August 9, 2018, demonstrates in preclinical studies that non-antibiotic-based strategies—such as nutritional interventions—can shift the relationship between the patient and pathogens away from antagonism and toward cooperation.

"Antibiotics and antimicrobials are one of the most important advances in medicine, and we definitely need to continue efforts focused on developing new classes of antimicrobials," says Associate Professor Janelle Ayres, who holds the Helen McLoraine Developmental Chair and is senior author of the new paper. "But we need to learn from history and think about other ways to treat infectious diseases. Our work suggests that instead of killing bacteria, if we promote the health of the host, we can tame the behavior of the bacteria so that they don't cause disease, and we can actually drive the evolution of less dangerous strains.""

"For the current work, Ayres' team studied a naturally occurring gastrointestinal infection in mice caused by Citrobacter rodentium (CR), which leads to diarrhea, weight loss and, in extreme cases, death. (CR is related to pathogenic E. coli that are associated with human food recalls.)"

"Clean eating bloggers would have you believe that eating organic will save your life and save the planet in one delicious flurry of oh-so-healthy vegetables.

She added: ‘While an organic farm may be better for things like biodiversity, farmers will need more land to grow the same amount of food.
‘And land conversion for agriculture is the leading contributor to habitat loss and climate change.’
( ...)
"Perhaps the most shocking is that organic farms use pesticides – and sometimes use ones which are more toxic than the ones used by ‘normal’ farms.

(...) organic farmers can still use pesticide, they just can’t be synthetically made – and some natural pesticides are a more serious health and environmental risk than synthetic ones. Natural doesn’t always mean better.
Previous reports have highlighted the risks of toxic copper sulfate – used by some organic vegetable growers.

Organic food is alo more likely to give you food poisoning, according to ASAP science – with one study suggesting that up to 10% had traces of food poisoning bacteria E Coli.

ASAP Science says, ‘Organic food has a higher incidence of product recalls. On average 1% of food products are recalled – but 7% of organic products.’

There’s also little evidence that organic food is actually better for you – although it’s often up to 47% more expensive, according to Consumer Reports.

A 2012 Stanford study analysed 237 previous studies of organic foods and found that most here, ‘no more nutritious than conventionally grown foods’"

O panorama terrível do frango no RU (E.Coli multi resistente)

http://m.huffpost.com/uk/entry/uk_57cd5ba6e4b01e35922bb63f

"One in four supermarket chicken samples contain antibiotic-resistant E coli, according to research from the University of Cambridge.
A study discovered the bacteria in packs of meat sold at major supermarkets including Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, Waitrose, the Co-op and Aldi.
Mark Holmes, who conducted the research, hailed the findings as “worrying”."
(...)
"He said that by the time they receive the right antibiotic, the bug could be “out of control”, which could potentially be fatal.
He raised concerns that not enough is being done to monitor antibiotic resistance in farm animals and retail meat.
The new study, which also analysed pork samples, found that half (51%) of all chicken and pork samples were resistant to the antibiotic trimethoprim. This is often used to treat lower urinary-tract infections."

"Also known as VTEC, Escherichia coli O157, is a bacterial infection that can cause severe stomach pain, bloody diarrhoea and kidney failure, according to NHS Choices.
It’s found in the poo and stomachs of cattle and other animals and is caught by eating contaminated food, including raw leafy veg and undercooked meat. Swimming in ponds or streams that are contaminated can also be an issue.
Symptoms generally occur around three to four days after first being infected, but can start anywhere between one to 14 days afterwards and can last up to two weeks.

The NHS says “a small number of people with E. coli O157 infection go on to develop a serious condition called haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). This can sometimes lead to kidney failure and death, although this is rare. The risk of HUS is highest in children aged under five years.”"
